Speaker: Street Soccer USA Managing Director – Lisa Wrightsman

Lisa Wrightsman was destined for a pro-soccer career, but her league folded and she turned to drugs. Sobriety and an unexpected community reconnected her with the game.

As a child, Californian Lisa was anxious and felt she didn’t fit in. But after being introduced to soccer, her confidence was transformed. Her ability took her to college and gave her the opportunity to play with the country’s best players and the national team.

“I didn’t have a lot of confidence but once I was on the field I could do something skilful that others couldn’t.”

On track to play at the highest level, Lisa’s dreams were cut short in 2003 when the women’s professional league announced it would be dissolving. Struggling with this news, Lisa became addicted to drugs and gave up her soccer ambitions.

“I lost my mind. I couldn’t figure out how I was so good at something, and so bad at living.”

Lisa knew she had to change. She got clean in rehab and met a rag-tag team of soccer players, all former addicts, homeless or struggling with poverty.

This team re-ignited Lisa’s love of the game, and she went on to represent the US at the 2011 Homeless World Cup in Brazil. The experience was life changing.

Returning home to Sacramento, Lisa decided she wanted to help support other vulnerable people in her community and transform lives through soccer.
